MASTT Paper Quilling - November 2021

These are some photos from a MASTT paper quilling event that I hosted.

For my Step 1 project, I had done a paper quilling mural comparing the growth of a flower to that of confidence in a new skill (and for me, this was teaching). A couple of years later, I hosted a Paper Quilling Workshop for MASTT on November 30, 2021. The officers wanted to do a nice destressing activity for the members because finals week was coming up, and I decided to host this workshop. I thought it was a nice way to talk to other people while also engaging in arts and crafts.

For this workshop, I had cut out strips of paper (of varying different colors) and little pieces of cardstock for people to use. I then showed them how to paper quill on a presentation and circulated around to make sure if anyone needed help while working on their design. This workshop ended up being a success, and a few people even stayed afterwards to finish up their design.

This workshop was the first precedent of many workshop ideas that I would start suggesting to use as social events for UTeach. I liked the fact that people could come into the workshop and walk away with an artifact while also talking to their friends and meeting other people in the program. It was a nice break from doing and talking about anything related to academics, and it really built a sense of community amongst the attendees. One thing that I realized while doing craft events like this is that the designs would take a really long time. The attendees would have the option of taking home their design to finish it, but that would mean there's another thing on their to-do list, defeating the purpose of doing a stress-free activity anyway. Some things I might change in the future moving forward is having designs for people already prepared in case they didn't want to come up with their own design.
