These are some photos I took at an embroidery workshop I attended at Art League Houston.
On December 16, 2023, I went to an embroidery workshop hosted at Art League Houston. This was organized by local Houston artist, Marley Foster, in the Montrose area. She was putting together a community quilt that resembled the shape of a flag. During the workshop that I had attended, she told us about how quilts were made to have a message in mind (her message for this communal quilt was "What Protects"). This is also why quilts have been used throughout different movements throughout history, serving as a time capsule for these different time periods. In addition, quilts can be very personal as it can also serve to connect different pieces made from various artists and makers.
This was a very cool and unique experience. There is such a personal value in community art when everyone can contribute to a work like this. Like I said earlier, this can really showcase the connections between different perspectives, allowing them to see how they contribute to a broader community. Thus, in a classroom setting, it is important for students to really contribute to making inside of the classroom, allowing it to be a community space for them to learn. Students are able to see themselves as a contributing member of their space for them to feel comfortable making in it.
