These are some photos from a holiday themed project we did for our fall 2021 showcase.
For our Fall 2021 team semester project, my maker team (Jeremy, Rich, Cindy) designed a holiday house with the resemblance of a snow globe. This first created using a concept sketch were we each sketched a design for an item that could be used for teachers or a holiday themed project. After sketching out all of our ideas, my team decided on our holiday house snow globe.
Our project included a lot of cardboard crafts, paper crafts, and a little bit of engineering. I mainly focused on the cardboard crafts where I designed the house out of cardboard. For the house, I scored the piece of cardboard to fold it into a cube, and I used the same scoring technique to add a triangular prism on top of it. Cindy worked on the other decorations around the house, which varied from tiny cardboard trees and candy canes made out of paper straws. Jeremy worked on making the stand for our design, which included an air system using fans to blow the snow around, and programmed it. Rich worked on making the snow for our design, which was primarily shavings from styrofoam. After the stand was finished, we put our decorations on top of it and encased it with an acrylic cover.
Our holiday house snow globe was mostly a success, but it mainly was able to blow the snow around when we put our hands underneath the fans. If we were to make any changes, we probably would have come up with a system to circulate the air a lot better for it to have a snow globe effect. Although, one thing about the effect of snow in a snow globe is that is also uses water, and water behaves a lot differently than air. Even though this was a successful team project, this has made me realize that there is a lot that goes into it. With team projects where there isn't much scaffolding built into it, it is up to the members to decide when to meet and what to work on. Thus, time is very limited to availabilities within our schedules to check in with one another. People can always check in with each other and the progress, but most of the work can get done when the team is together. When it comes to building in team projects in a classroom, I have realized that it is important to build a lot of scaffolding and structure for teams to talk to one another as students are also limited by their schedules due to other classes, extracurriculars, and afterschool life commitments.
